FedEx is raising shipping rates 6.9%, which provides an opportunity for stores to get shoppers in the physical store. Store owners can encourage customers to skip the expensive ‘shipping tax’ and just pick their purchase up in store.
While waiting for breakfast, I noticed this ‘Boycott Amazon’ sticker. I think that getting customers to stop something—or start something—is a tough practice. There are fields of science (psychology) and marketing (branding) dedicated to this. Is it easier to get someone to start or stop (boycott) something?

Retailers: You may have to cut your shipping rates. :)
As as a reference, Etsy is encouraging its sellers to reduce their shipping rates shares todayβs WSJ.
Offering free shipping can often be written off as the cost of getting a customer. Wayfair pays almost $200 to acquire a new customer, so a store offering free shipping which may cost $20 seems like a bargain.

How do your shipping prices compare to Amazon's? Not good news: you're probably paying 300% more. That's like it buying an item at $100 while you pay $300. Today's WSJ does an expose on shipping charges.
These different shipping rates are one reason Amazon can afford to offer "free shipping" -- free shipping for it costs two thirds less than what it costs you. When you start talking next day shipping, Amazon's clout has even more benefit: you pay about 600% more in shipping charges.

Retailers often ask me how much they should charge for shipping. Retailers often tell me that they'd like to make money on shipping, or at the least not lose any.
I'd remind retailers that many large retailers are losing money on shipping. In this super competitive environment, just getting the sale and a new customer are the goals.

Finally some good news for brick and mortar, independent retailers: shipping rates are going up. This will likely affect amazon and online only stores more then stores on Main St. This may drive more customers to literally drive to the store and buy goods.
